Kitty love - I <3 My Kitties!
[info]firesplace
This was NOT how I intended to spend my evening...!

I worked late tonight and stopped by the store on the way home. It was just before dark when I walked in to see Kiefer climbing in the bushes behind the hot tub out back. He was waving to get my attention, and told me he'd heard a kitten back there while BBQing dinner.

I dropped everything, patted the three resident felines, and rushed outside. I managed to crawl further into the brush, and heard the mews, too. As I got closer, the kittens broke from their hiding place and rushed over to me. They actually covered quite a bit of distance. I scooped one up, and the second kept running towards me, so I grabbed it as well.

I handed them each to Kiefer, who was back down the hill, and stepped forward to check out a dark shadow there. When the shadow opened yellow eyes and hissed at me, I realized it was an adult cat. I assume it was probably the mother, although I couldn't tell you for sure. Kiefer and I agnoized over what to do - try to give the kittens back? Kiefer finally decided we'd take the little ones into the warmth, and call a vet to ask for advice.

So, we did. I sat downstairs with the little things on my lap while he called an emergency vet. The vet said that the mother (if that WAS the mom) might not take them back, so we were probably best off caring for them ourselves. After getting some into, Kiefer took off for the local Petco which was about to close (ever heard a Prius peel rubber?), and returned with formula, bottles, and a tiny litterbox.

We've gotten them to eat a little bit, snuggled them, and turned up the heat in my room (where Pozie's kept; there's lots of supplemental heat sources and it's the warmest place int he house). Both of the kittens are now curled up together on a spare blanket in a high-sided box.

I don't know whether we did the right thing - I hate to think we might have taken them from their mother. But I console myself with a few logical considerations. First, being raised in the wild, they'd likely end up feral - and probably breed more kittens of their own someday, if they lived long enough. Second, well, that's a BIG 'if'. While I was sitting downstairs with them in my lap, I was startled by a scraping on glass. I looked up to see a large raccoon standing on his hind legs and pawing at the sliding glass door. If that 'coon found these tiny things, well, I'm not sure it would be a pretty sight. And then there's the coyotes we hear calling out there many nights...

As best as we can tell right now, they're somewhere between 1-3 weeks of age. We'll take them to our vet first thing in the morning, and Kiefer thinks his work will be OK with him working from home tomorrow. After that, we'll likely have to stagger our day schedules to make sure we're here as much as possible for the little ones.

I don't know whether we'll keep them, but the possibility is there. At the least, we'll be prepared to care for them until a foster home is found.

I think the chances are that we'll do our best to raise them ourselves, tho. I mean...How can you resist KITTENS?? Look at them!! =D =D =D

That's my hand. My hands aren't all that big - the kitten is just that small!

Nope, you have to have a very hardened heart to resist kittens. Good on you two for taking them in and taking care of them. *chuckle* Going by my own past experience, you may have just acquired a couple new residents.

We very well may have...XD My father has already called me crazy for it, but we'll leave the idea of keeping them open for consideration. It will very much depend on the reaction of the residents, of course - if the big boys are upset, we'll go ahead and find the kittens homes.
I doubt there will be any shortage of kitten-lovers if we have to do that, tho. =D

8D I am squealing from the cuteness. If only my text could capture that. Sooo cuuuute!

Holy crap. You guys NEED to get a video camera. XD

Our camera does take good video; we got a brief snap of them earlier, although the sound is mainly me talking on the phone to my father.
Will likely get some videos when it's light out tomorrow/over the weekend. =)

Oh my goodness, they are so cute! I think you guys did the right thing, and you'll also be able to give them a good home, if not your home with someone else.

One minor note, which you may already know, at that age you may have to teach them to go potty. A warm damp wash cloth (think momma cat's tongue) rubbed over their bellies should do it. I've had to do it in the past, once they learn how to go you can point them to the litter box.

*nods* We're actually working on that, but the big concern is that we haven't gotten much out of them yet. Hoping we'll get more in the morning/the vet can help. Keeping a close eye on them in the meantime!!

Oh my good god... MORE BOYS??? I think you need some more estrogen in the house! ;)

TELL me about it! I'm desperately hoping we're wrong, and the vet will say at least one of them is female. I love male cats, but YEESH!! XD

And here in our household, we have too many girls! XD

Hey, speaking of... I know male cats spray, but out of all of the ones I've known, only a few actually did. Your boys don't and neither does Oscar (the boy downstairs). Is it a cat-by-cat thing? The ones that I know that did were all outdoor cats so maybe that has something to do with it?

I think it's very much a cat-by-cat thing, and also has something to do with the age at which they're fixed. We know Nick was fixed young, are not sure about Cal, and know Trevor was fixed only when we got him (late; he was around 2.5 years old). If they are allowed to reach full sexual maturity, they have more of a chance of spraying. Getting them fixed will always help, although it won't always eliminate the behaviour entirely.

We've been really lucky, although there have been one or two accidents - nothing chronic, tho, thankfully. =D

Personally, I think outdoor cats are a little more likely to spray because it's a territorial behaviour, and outdoor cats are more concerned with defending theirs. I dunno if that's ever been proven or anything, tho!

OH, I almost forgot - we're clearing out that downstairs room for painting this weekend, and we've set aside the old cat tree. Does Daria still want it? We'll clean it up and ship it on over to you sometime soon if you like! =)

YES!! That would be WONDERFUL! :D :D :D

Awesome! It's not in perfect condition and part of the carpet has been scratched thoroughly, but it's still perfectly usable. And I can promise that the boys have no diseases or parasites (they've never even gotten fleas - knock on wood!), so it's safe for the girls. =)
I'll try to get it cleaned up this weekend!

AUGH! *flump* *dead of the cute*

seriously though, kudos to you for being a good-cat-samaritan. If you guys DO end up keeping the li'l fluffballs, you're pretty much guaranteed to have two absolutely fantastically-well-socialized cats, a friend of mine has a cat she raised from almost that young, and well, that cat almost thinks he's a dog.
Seriously. He plays fetch.

Also, I <3 the composition on that second picture, the outline of the kittens is a heart! that's just begging to be macro'd, I think. :D

You know, I hadn't even noticed the heart shape! Awwww! =D =D
I think these guys are going to be fodder for LOTS and LOTS of macros. ;)

Congratulations Momma!

And yes, I think you did the right thing. I look at our sleepy dog passed out the big, fluffy, warm comforter on our bed with her legs stretched out, tail stretched out, neck stretched out, and I realize, she would never be able to relax like that if she were out in the wild on her own. And neither would those kitties. And that is if they survived predators, food hunting, and breeding multiple litters.

*nodnod* The vet said the very same thing - reiterated what we'd thought of in regards to feral cats, the dangers they face between predators, traffic, and disease, and overpopulation as well.
And AWW, she sounds like such a happy dog! Need pictures!! <3 =D

Awwwwww. They are very cute. Congratulations Mama! You gots kittens!

OMG Fire...

The lighter colored kitten looks exactly like the kitten I dreamed about Tuesday night!

http://purrzah.livejournal.com/483137.html

It so makes me wish I could adopt it from you! But I can't afford my apartment complex deposit. :(

Oh wow, how weird! I can promise we'll keep lawnmowers away from this little dear. =D
Darn apartment complexes! They charge some ridiculous fees, don't they?!

Mmmm, BBQ'd kittens....

What? That's not what this post is about?

Nope...And no 'other white meat' jokes, either! ;)

Oh, how CUTE!!! XD You guys totally did the right thing, and for the right reasons too. They are adorable, and please keep us updated on their well being! What a way to spend your evening. ^^

This is all very new to me - I've never dealt with kittens younger than 6-8 weeks, so I just hope we can keep 'em safe and healthy. And I'll definately post a lot! There will be MANY pictures. =D
